Impingement and Entrainment Impact Study

This report is an assessment of potential impacts to marine life due to water withdrawals associated with the operation of screened ocean intakes for West Basin’s ocean water desalination demonstration facility and an intake for a potential full-scale desalination plant. The two objectives for this study were 1) to determine the potential effects on marine organisms due to the operation of the intakes for the demonstration and full-scale facilities, and 2) to determine the efficiency of wedge wire intake screens at reducing the effects of entrainment and impingement. Desalinated Ocean Water Quality Integration Study

This study evaluated the potential impacts of introducing high-quality desalinated ocean water into drinking water distribution systems that had previously been exposed to Metropolitan Water District water and/or groundwater sources. In addtion, disinfectant residual stability and disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation were investigated both at a pilot-scale and at a bench-scale in the laboratory by the Metropolitan Water District. Brine Diffuser Impact Study

This report looks at the possible issues associated with sheer and entrainment mortality of high pressure discharge diffusers. West Basin High Salinty Sensitivity Study

Harmful Algal Bloom and Marine Biotoxin Study

This report provides the objectives, results, and recommendations from stormwater and marine biotoxin monitoring as part of a program partially funded by the California Department of Water Resources under Proposition 50. Monitoring activities for this program focused on the effects of stormwater inputs and harmful algal blooms (HABs) on the desalination process at the El Segundo pilot plant.
